Orlyn Gerald Hamborg was born on July 21, 1928, on a farm in Colfax Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Casper and Ruth (Hanson) Hamborg. He grew up in the rural Belgrade community, was baptized and confirmed at Crow River Lutheran Church and received his education in country school. Following 8th grade, Orlyn began working for area farmers to help support his family. In his late teens, he moved out west to work for farmers in Montana and Arizona. They made their home in Norway Lake Township on a dairy farm where they raised their seven children. Orlyn loved farming, especially doing custom work with his friend, Sig, his horse teams, hauling cattle and driving around the countryside looking at the crops. He loved his time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
