Owen H. Flaata, age 76, of Willmar, formerly of the Sacred Heart area, died Sunday morning, October 1st, at the Parkview Home in Belview.
A memorial service will be held 11 am, Friday, October 6th, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar with Rev. H. Paul McCullough officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Military Honors will be provided by Milton Barber Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3871 of Granite Falls.
Owen Harvey Flaata was born May 31, 1930 near Belview, Minnesota, the son of Oscar Regenius and Adella Lenora (Knutson) Flaata. He grew up and received his education in the Belview and Sacred Heart area. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1952 to 1954. On November 9, 1956, he married Carol J. Haselwood in Minot, North Dakota and they made their home in the Sacred Heart area where Owen worked as an automotive mechanic. In 1992, they retired and moved to Lake Calhoun near Spicer. After Owen became ill in 2004, they moved to Willmar. He was a life-member of the Granite Falls VFW. Owen enjoyed being at the lake and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Carol of Willmar; his children, Jan (and Jeff) Dahl of New London, Margo (and Keith) Holien of Spicer, Denise Hammre of Sacred Heart, Ruth (and Jeff) Goldenstein of Kerkhoven, Bruce (and Lynn) Flaata of Granite Falls and Russell (and Kim) Flaata of Granite Falls and 14 grandchildren; Amanda Holien, Barrett Holien, Bennett Goldenstein, Melissa Johnson, Brittany Holien, Lindsay Flaata, Jessica Flaata, Jared Dahl, Nichole Hammre, Kendra Goldenstein, Shaunna Flaata, Ashley Holien, Jason Dahl and Kaitlyn Flaata. Also surviving are six brothers, Merlyn (and Carol) Flaata of Minneapolis, LeRoy (and Janice) Flaata of Lobster Lake, Dennis (and Marcene) Flaata of Lake Amelia, Orlan (and Kathleen) Flaata of Hutchinson, Floyd (and Jan) Flaata of Scottsdale, Arizona and Arden (and Marjorie) Flaata of Sacred Heart; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Owen was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Donald Hammre in 2003 and a niece, Nancy Flaata in 1995.
