John Layman

September 7, 1937 — June 25, 2007

John Raymond Layman, 69, of Willmar, died Monday, June 25, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

The service will be on Thursday, June 28th at 10:30 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at the Graceville Consolidated Cemetery in Graceville, Minnesota. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post #167 of Willmar.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Calvary Lutheran Church. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.



He was born Sept. 7th 1937, in Graceville to Earl and Della (Bump) Layman. He grew up in Graceville and graduated from Graceville High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962 and then served four years in the reserves.
He moved to Willmar and worked for Burlington Northern Railroad. He married Shirley Evenson-Essendrup on June 22nd, 1979. For the past 9 years he resided at Infinia Care Center and Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home.

He is survived by three sons: James (and Mary) Layman of Roseland, Ricky (and Jody) of Balaton, and Jon (and Patty) of Willmar; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; Three stepchildren: Richard Holwerda of Willmar, Dora Ransford of North Sioux City, South Dakota, Danny (and Jill) Holwerda of Grand Forks, North Dakota; eight step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson; six sisters: Jean (and Chet) Setterlund of Maple Grove, Edna Richmuth of Fergus Falls, MaryAnn (and Marvin) Weick of Graceville, his twin sister, Joan (and Paul) Wawers of Wahpeton, North Dakota, Ethel (and Jim) Phalen of Graceville, Clara (and Alvin) Beck of Minot, North Dakota; one brother: Robert Layman of Graceville, and one brother-in-law, Ed Lahs of Graceville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: Marvin, Earl, Bill, Erwin, and James; and one sister: Winnie.
