Jeanne was born on March 26, 1923, in Litchfield, Minnesota, the daughter of Hjalmer and Saidee (Pearson) Nelson. She grew up in the Litchfield community, attended rural District #72 school, graduated from Litchfield High School and received her Teacher's Training in Litchfield. She taught rural school in District #80 for 4 years. She met Russel Hess in her teen years. He worked on a farm near by. He was the love of her life. Russ went into the U.S. Navy in W.W. II and they married on August 3, 1946, just before he was discharged. They made their home in Willmar. Besides being a mother and homemaker, Jeanne worked outside the home as a secretary for many years. Since her retirement, she volunteered at the United Methodist Church being active in their bazaar, embroidering kitchen towels and making many other items, baking for the turkey dinners, caring for the flowers outside the church, delivering sermon tapes to nursing homes, giving communion and visiting many shut-ins. Jeanne also delivered Meals of Wheels and volunteered at the Rice Hospital information desk.
She is survived by four sons, Richard (and Linda) Hess of Willmar, Randy Hess of Maple Grove, Dean (and Laurie) Hess of Willmar and James (and LeeAnn) Hess of Bemidji; nine grandchildren, Lisa (and Shaun) McFarland, Chris Hess, Christina Hess, Steven Hess, Jenilee Hess, Adam Hess, Ian Hess, Kaia Hess and Alec Hess; and three great-grandchildren, Cody, Motanna and Reilly McFarland. Also surviving is one sister, Sandra (and Duane) Meyer of Burnsville, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russel in 1994; and one grandson, Philip Hess.
Her family has been devoted to her and especially met her needs during her illness these past few months. She was much-loved by all who knew her.
