WILLMAR, MN.

Janet Marquerite Perkins, age 71, of Willmar, died Thursday evening, April 5, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar following a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 10, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar with Rev. Steve Knutson officiating. Interment will be at Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. on Monday, April 9, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials to the Vinje Lutheran Church building fund, Rice Hospice or American Cancer Society are preferred.
Janet was born on July 2, 1935, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of John and Lila (Clark) Berner. She grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School in 1953. Jan moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she worked and attended Northwestern University. On June 16, 1956, she was married to Marvin A. Perkins Jr. They lived in Long Beach, California before moving back to Willmar to help operate the family business, Perkins Lumber Company, and raise her family.
Jan was a dedicated mother and grandmother. With her family, she enjoyed many outdoor activities which included skiing, boating, camping, time in the woods and rock hounding.
Jan was an active member of Vinje Lutheran Church where she served as Release Time Coordinator, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Altar Guild and womens circle. She was a WCCO Good Neighbor award winner who volunteered over 3,000 hours to the Minnesota Literacy Council, helping adults learn how to read. She was a past president of the ladies golf league at the Willmar Golf Club. Jan was an artist and also enjoyed golfing, the arts, playing bridge, dancing, Mary Martha Group, dinners with friends and traveling.
She is survived by her three children, Steven (and Cathy) Perkins of Maple Plain, Michael Perkins of Plymouth and Susan (and Chris) Olson of Willmar, five grandchildren and special friend, James Ammermann of Clara City. Also surviving are two brothers, John (and Karen) Berner of Golden Valley and James (and Cheri) Berner of Richfield and two sisters, Deanna Craton of New Hope and Deborah Berner of Robbinsdale, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Marvin in 1991.
