Herbert Zupke

EAGAN

Herbert M. Zupke, age 85, of Eagan, formerly of the Svea community, died Saturday, July 22nd, at the Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M., Wednesday, July 26th, at the Svea Lutheran Church with Rev. Todd Lynum officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post 167 and the Finstad-Week Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1639 of Willmar. Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the services.
Herbert Martin Zupke was born on February 21, 1921, in Fahlun Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Anna (Anderstrom) and Edward Zupke. He grew up in the rural Svea community, was baptized and confirmed at the Svea Lutheran Church and attended the Fahlun Township School. In June 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas in England and France during World War II. Following his discharge he returned home to work on the family farm. On June 5, 1948, he was married to Avis Ellingson. She died in 1975. In December 1978, he was married to Pearl Onnen. She died in 1983. Following his retirement from the farm, he moved into Willmar. In October 2004, he moved to Eagan. He was a committeeman of the ASCS Board, a member of the Blomkest Sportsman's Club, former member of the Svea Creamery Board and the church council. He enjoyed music, especially singing and playing his guitar.
He is survived by three children, Janet (and Virgil) Crowder of Stillwater, Marlene Zupke of Eagan, and Steven (and Peggy Peterson) Zupke of Eagan and four grandchildren; Benjamin (and Erin) Crowder, Amy, Matthew and Mark Crowder. Also surviving are three siblings; Elvera Larson of Willmar, Delores Gundberg of Phoenix, Arizona and Vern (and Eleanor) Zupke of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, besides other relatives and friends. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and six brothers (Irwin, Albert, Marvin, Alfred, Kermit and Harry Zupke).
