Dorothy Angeline Thorp, age 92, of Atwater, died Saturday afternoon, April 15, at the Emmanuel Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, April 20, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Atwater with Rev. Grant Fischer officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. on Wednesday, April 19, at the Atwater Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Dorothy was born on April 21, 1913, on the family farm near Atwater, Minnesota, the daughter of John N. and Anthonie (Moe) Brown. She grew up in the Atwater community, was baptized at the Arndahl Lutheran Church in Grove City and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Atwater. She attended school in Atwater and graduated from Atwater High School in 1930. On February 21, 1935, Dorothy was united in marriage to Burton P. Thorp. They lived and farmed in Acton Township near Atwater. In 1976, they retired from farming and moved into Atwater. She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church serving in the Naomi circle, quilting group and member of the Bethlehem WELCA. She was also a charter 4-H leader of the Acton Buzzers and member of the West Actonettes Home Extension group. Dorothy enjoyed being a homemaker, gardening, flowers, crocheting, playing cards and spending time with her family.
She is survived by one son, Richard (and Lorna) Thorp of Atwater; a daughter-in-law, Ardis Thorp of Grove City; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Burton in 1996; two sons, Steven in 1970 and Gerald in 1999; one great grandson, Brian in 2000, and one sister, Mildred.
