Connie Jean Scheevel, age 70, of Spicer, passed away Wednesday morning, January 3, at the St. Cloud Hospital surrounded by her family.

 

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer.  Interment will be at the Faith Lutheran Columbarium.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 12, at Faith Lutheran Church and visitation will also continue for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to honor Connie may be directed to the Spicer Beautification Committee or please donate a book to an elementary school of your choice.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Peterson Brothers Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer.  www.petersonbrothers.com

 

Connie Jean (Hillman) Scheevel was born on December 18th, 1953, to Margie (Helmbolt) and Hugo Hillman in Canby, MN. She attended Canby Public Schools graduating in 1972. She attended Augsburg College graduating in 1976 with an education degree. She taught in the Willmar Public Schools for 34 years. 

 

Connie was united in marriage to John Scheevel in 1976. They settled in the New London - Spicer area and were blessed with two children, Katie and James. Her children followed in her educational footsteps by becoming teachers. 

 

Her greatest joy in life were her two granddaughters, Josselyn Molly and Jilonnie Margo. She shared her love of reading, gardening, swimming, and crafts with them. She was an adoring grandmother.

 

During the summers she and John owned and operated the Spicer Dairy Freeze from 1977-1985. She was also very involved in the Spicer Commercial Club, and was an instrumental founder in the starting of the Miss Spicer Program. Upon retirement she continued her involvement in the community with the Spicer Beautification Committee.

 

Through her teaching and community involvement, Connie impacted the lives of many students and community members. She continued her passion for teaching by sharing her knowledge through subbing in many schools throughout the surrounding communities. Her smile and dedication to children will be missed.

 

Connie is survived by her husband John, daughter Katie Scheevel, James (Jessica) Scheevel , granddaughters Josselyn and Jilonnie, brothers Darwin (Laurie) Hillman and Don Hillman, three sisters-in-law Kay (Ed) Rauk, Janice (Ron) Szews, and Rocky Scheevel, and many loving nieces and nephews and friends. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; one nephew, Brian Jensen; one great niece, Marly Hillman; two sisters-in-law, Cindi Hillman and Judy Jensen; and two brothers-in-law, Phil Scheevel and Bill Jensen.
