Clyde H. Svobodny, age 97, of Willmar passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, August 30, at Bethesda Grand in Willmar, surrounded by family.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, at the Church of St. Mary. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Sibley State Park Improvement Association (SSPIA). Arrangements are entrusted to the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home. www.petersonbrothers.com
Clyde was born in Roseland Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, to Thomas and Sophie (Stadther) Svobodny on April 26, 1927. He was baptized and confirmed at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Renville, MN. Clyde attended Rural School District No. 87 in Roseland Township through 8th grade and graduated from Danube High School in 1945. Following graduation, he spent time in California, living with his sister and family, working various jobs. Clyde returned to Danube, Minnesota in 1947 to operate a Texaco Station.
On June 12, 1948, Clyde was united in marriage to Gladys Alvig of Willmar. The young couple resided in Danube. In 1950, Clyde sold his Texaco Station, and they moved to Willmar where Clyde worked for Swenson Motor Company. He worked as Sales Manager for 57 years, retiring on his 80th birthday. Some people called him “Mr. Oldsmobile”. Through his work, Clyde was rewarded several trips. He and his wife also traveled to many areas of the country, particularly enjoying winter trips to Naples, Florida.
Clyde enjoyed hunting trip trips with his sons through the years. He always liked driving through the countryside to enjoy the scenery of lakes, woodlands and parks. Clyde was a hard worker and took pride in his home and family.
Surviving Clyde are his beloved wife, Gladys; sons Michael (Miriam), Jim (Kay) and Daniel (Lisa) and grandchildren, Julie Golyer (Shain), John Svobodny (Jeannie), Michael Curtis (Jenny), Eric Svobodny (Molly), Sarah Johnson, Kristen Quick (Mitch), Jordan Svobodny, Alexander Svobodny and Geoffrey Svobodny; eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margie and Velora; one brother Raymond, and daughter, Mary Curtis Aistrop.
