Alice Ruter was born on July 9,1937, near Priam, Minnesota. She was the seventh child of twelve children born to George and Minnie (Ritz) Ruter. She grew up in the Roseland area attending Priam country school. Alice left school early to help on the farm. Alice was a hard worker. She loved to work and be outside. She loved to play “kitten ball”. Alice was a waitress at the Purity Castle Café in Willmar before getting married. She married Merlin Thompson on April 13,1957, at the First Presbyterian Church in Willmar. Merlin and Alice lived in Willmar and Clara City for a short time, then purchased and moved to a farm north of Clara City in 1964. They were blessed with three sons, Mike, Albert, and Mark.

They lived on the farm and milked dairy cows, raised pigs and chickens.  Alice loved to milk cows and was involved in the farm work.  Merlin passed away in 1985, and Alice continued to farm with the help of her son Mark and good neighbors.  The cows were sold in 1987.  Alice needed a job, so she went to work in housekeeping at Rice Memorial Hospital, working from 1988 – 2008.

During this time, she got to know Ed Jaenisch better and they fell in love and were married on May 13, 1989, at Immanual Lutheran Church in Clara City.  Alice and Ed did many things together after retiring from their jobs.  They enjoyed threshing shows, fairs, bingo, cards, visiting, grandchildren, and family.   Alice was kind and caring and always put others first.  Her house was always open and if you stopped at her house, you would never get away without having something to eat.  For many years Alice was involved with the Women’s Circle at Immanual Lutheran Church in Clara City.  She was a wonderful wife, mom, grandma, friend and loved by her brothers and sisters and their families.  Alice passed away surrounded by family members at Rice Memorial Hospital at the age of 86.  She will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her husband Ed Jaenisch of Willmar; three sons: Mike (Susan) Thompson of Casper, WY; Albert (Nancy) Thompson of Beaver Dam, WI; and Mark (Colleen) Thompson of Willmar; eight grandchildren:  Emily (Kelly) Sorenson, Justin (Katie) Thompson, Gerrett Thompson; Kyle Thompson, Ryan Thompson, Bryce Thompson; Dana Thompson and Jena (Cole) Berget and six great grandchildren.   She is also survived by her siblings: George (Julie) Ruter, Gerald (Betty) Ruter, all of Willmar, Tina Harried of Sacred Heart, Louise (Curtney) Carlson of Pennock, Linda (Clinton) Kamstra of Willmar; and an array of nieces, nephews, and other relatives along with many family friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, George and Minne Ruter; husband, Merlin Thompson; brothers, Henry, Herbert, John Ruter and sisters, Fannie Mithaugen, Tillie Hauge and Ruth Hauge.
