Melvin Peterson

December 6, 1935 — June 8, 2018

Melvin D. Peterson, age 82, of rural Atwater, died Friday morning, June 8, at his home.


A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, at the First Lutheran Church in rural Cosmos. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A private interment will be at a later date at the Rosendale Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home. www.petersonbrothers.com


Melvin Dale Peterson was born on December 6, 1935, in Litchfield, Minnesota the son of Adolph and Flossie (Hawes) Peterson. Melvin grew up in the Rosendale community, was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rosendale and received his education in the District #72 School and Litchfield High School. After the death of his father, he maintained and grew the family farm. On June 21, 1958, Melvin was united in marriage to Lloye Catherine Jensen and they made their home on the family farm. Melvin was deeply committed to Lloye for almost 60 years. They raised 5 boys. He took great pride and pleasure in his sons, their families and his grandchildren. Melvin was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rosendale and First Lutheran Church of Cosmos, serving on the church council and as an usher. Melvin worked off the farm hauling canned milk, working at Cozy Cab, driving truck and working for Green Giant. He was also active with 4-H, FFA, the American Red Poll Association, the National Arabian Horse Association and the Los Charros Saddle Club, where he led many local parades on this prized Arabian horse called Sugar Foot. Melvin loved horses, cattle, dogs and farming. He loved to attend auctions and horse sales. He drove blue tractors before they were popular. Melvin lived for making hay and picking ear corn. He was a good steward of the land, planting many various crops, plants and trees throughout his life. Melvin was tough, strong and powerful, yet had a wonderful sense of humor and a warm and loving heart. He enjoyed playing pranks on family members and friends.


He is survived by his loving wife, Lloye; four sons, Russell (and Pamela) Peterson of Grove City, Bradley (and Cindy) Peterson of Cosmos, Tod (and Kimberly) Peterson of Montrose, SD., and Delvin (and Lynn) Peterson of Lake Lillian; sixteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Art (and Loretta) Peterson of Eden Prairie; several nieces and nephews, besides other relatives and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son and son, Dale.


In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery Fund of Rosendale.
