Glenn Stranberg

October 10, 1917 — January 12, 2018

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater with military honors provided by the Willmar and Atwater American Legion Posts. Interment will be at a later date in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Atwater Area Help for Seniors are preferred.

Glenn Arthur Stranberg was born in Gennessee Township, near Atwater, MN on October 10th, 1917 to Minnie (Peterson) and Lambert Stranberg.  He attended District #41 country school until he graduated 8th grade in 1932.  After graduation, he worked on the family farm until the US Army drafted him in 1942.

He spent three years as an Army Medic, the first year on the Aleutian Island of Kiska. On leave home he married Betty Ferguson on the Ferguson farm southwest of Atwater on April 25th, 1944. After his leave, he received orders to deploy to Europe, where he eventually followed the liberators into Dachau, the German Concentration Camp. At the end of his time in Dachau, he boarded a troop train with orders to Japan. Fortunately the war ended and he was reunited with Betty on Christmas Eve in 1945.

He returned home to the family farm, pursued his passion for farming; milking cows and raising sheep, cattle and crop. Glenn and Betty raised four children, Charles (Jean) of rural Atwater, Linda, also of Atwater, Larry (Sheryl) of Diamond Lake, and Kevin (Steve Kassof) of Ashland, WI.

Glenn loved hunting and fishing almost as much as farming, and spent a great deal of time in those pursuits. He was also active in the community, serving on the Gennessee Township Board for 12 years, the ASCS Board for 9 years and numerous years on the church board. He was a life member of both the American Legion and VFW, of which he was very proud.

He was preceded in death by his parent, his sister, Agnes Stranberg Remmel, two granddaughters, Robin Bredeson and Stacey Tesch and a foster son, Jerome Everson.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Betty (Ferguson) Stranberg, his four children, six grandchildren, Reid, Jill, Kurt, Beth, Darin and Jennie, fourteen great grandchildren, six nieces and nephews, a host of friends and relatives, and several special people who are an important part of the Stranberg family.
