Gladys Schennum, mother, Gramma, Great Gramma, Great-Great Gramma and dear friend to many, died peacefully November 14, 2014 at Bethesda Pleasant View in Willmar, Minnesota. She was 102 years old. Her loving and steadfast friend, Pam Schwab and her much loved granddaughter, Jane Rovente, were with her.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 14, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar.
Gladys was born July 12, 1912, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Sigurd and Viva Westby. She was the oldest of three girls. She became a teacher and then continued her schooling and obtained the degree of Registered Nurse. More than eighty years ago, while caring for his mother, she met Harold Schennum. They were married in 1934 in Minneapolis. They had three children, Dean, Karen and Gerald.
They moved to Willmar in 1948, where Harold pursued his career in insurance with Lutheran Brotherhood. Harold passed away in 1989 at 80 years of age.
Gladys was a faithful volunteer in her church and community. You could always count on her to step in and help. She will be greatly missed by so many.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, her daughter Karen, her grandson John. She outlived many of her friends and family enjoying phenomenally good health throughout her life.
She is survived by her sons, Dean and Gerald, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
