Douglas Mossberg

Douglas P. Mossberg, age 88, of Spicer, died Thursday morning, May 12, at the Glen Oaks Care Center in New London.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar with military honors provided by the Willmar American Legion Post #167. Interment will be at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.


Douglas Philip Mossberg was born on March 16, 1928, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of John and Josephine (Cody) Mossberg. He grew up in Willmar, was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church and graduated from Willmar High School in 1946. from 1946 to 1948, Doug served in the U.S. Army Airborne in Japan. Following his honorable discharge from the service, Doug enrolled at the University of Minnesota. On June 23, 1950, in St. Paul, Doug was united in marriage to Margaret "Peggy" Hemmersbaugh. They lived in St. Paul while attending the U of M. In 1952, Doug graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry. Doug was employed as a salesman in various agriculture related sales. They lived in the communities of Wabasha, South St. Paul, Fairmont, New Ulm and Minnetonka. In 1978, they moved to Spicer and Doug retired in the late 1980's.

Doug was a founding member of the Little Crow Photography Club and the Indian History Hunters Club. He was also a member of the Kandiyohi County Historical Society and the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center. His hobbies included photography, Indian history, woodworking, hunting and gardening, of which he was a Master Gardener. Doug was a devoted husband and caretaker to his loving wife and family.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy of Spicer; seven children, Dale (and Holly) Mossberg of New London, Dave Mossberg of Tuscon, AZ., Barbara (and Larry) Levin of Spicer, Bill (and Rose) Mossberg of Cologne, Helen (and Robert) Ruebel of Olivia, Margaret (and Gary) Tolle of Richfield and Jeanne (and Kirk) Norby of Corvallis, MT.; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Mary Jo in 1968 and Ruth Ellen in 2015; three brothers, Louis, John and Robert and two sisters, Catherine and Barbara.
