Darrel G. Schuetze, age 84, of Spicer, died Sunday morning, May 27, at Bethesda Club Suites in Willmar surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 1, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Interment will be at the Faith Lutheran Columbarium with military honors provided by the Spicer American Legion Post. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 31 at Faith Lutheran Church and will continue for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Faith Lutheran Church or Green Lake Lutheran Ministries are preferred. Darrel Gene Schuetze was born on August 28, 1933, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, the son of Joseph and Ruth (Hinklin) Schuetze. He grew up in Fergus Falls, graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1951 and Moorhead State Teachers College in 1955. In the fall of 1955, Darrel began teaching in Henning, Minnesota. On March 27, 1956, Darrel was united in marriage to Delores Frances Nagl and to this union three children were born: Ilene, Michael, and Bruce. In 1957, he was drafted into the US Army and served four years. Following his honorable discharge in 1961, Darrel and Delores moved to Litchfield, Minnesota, where he began teaching and coaching at the Litchfield Jr. High School. He retired from teaching in 1993. On November 26, 1994, Darrel was married to Sharon Rose Johnson. They lived in Litchfield and later moved to Spicer. Darrel was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church and volunteered with numerous community organizations and activities. He enjoyed music, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon of Spicer; six children, Ilene (and Mark) Reiter of Fairmont, MN, Michael (and Lynn) Schuetze of Albuquerque, NM, Bruce (and Tracy) Schuetze of Samson, AL, David (and Susan) Howe of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Jon (and Lucinda) Howe of Montgomery, AL and Lyndsay Lund of New London, NH; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Leora Nelson of California, Desta (and Tim) Hunt of Fergus Falls, MN, and Bonnie (and Dennis) Bergerud of Fergus Falls, MN; besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Delores and one granddaughter, Jennifer Delores Reiter.
